Summary
This series consists of aerial photograph negatives and prints and corresponding photographic indexes depicting the state's roads and highway system. The aerial photography which forms the basis for the index was contracted by the Department of Public Works and its successor, the Department of Transportation, to document the statewide infrastructure for planning and construction purposes. A relatively small number of images depict state institutions, such as state university campuses, and other geographic features.

These photographs, slides, and logs document the state transportation system, its structures, and state facilities created by the Department of Public Works (1923-1967) and its successor agency, the Department of Transportation. Images depict bridge and highway construction, canals repair and maintenance, and construction of state facilities. Some show employees and officials or landscapes and historic sites. Album pictures depict bridges, waterways, grade crossings, accidents, highways, hospitals, prisons, and schools. Some images document construction progress on the South Mall Project.

Records include correspondence plans, and an environmental impact statement pertaining to design of highways by outside consulting firms. Projects include Freeman's Bridge, South Park Avenue bridges, Hamilton Avenue Bridge in White Plains, New York State Thruway riverside ramps, work on Maurice Avenue to the Grand Central Parkway, sections of Rte. 74 and the Long Island Expressway.
