The reports in this series assess the action taken within the State Education Department in response to the recommendations of the Regents' Inquiry into the Character and Cost of Public Education, conducted from 1935 to 1938. Each report presents both the recommendations of and the actions taken in response to one aspect of the Regents' Inquiry. The subjects of these reports are: secondary education; the elementary school; school district organization; economies in school costs; state aid; the teacher; colleges and universities; adult education; the State Education Department; and school health and physical education.

These exhibit records consist of public school students' work from the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Sample student work came from New York City, Buffalo, and Plattsburgh public school systems. Other items included are photographs of school buildings, pamphlets, and art work.

These contracts provided for payments to allow children from one school district to attend school in a neighboring district. It included information about contracting districts; number of students who will attend school under the contract; who will provide transport students, period of contract, and amount to be paid; and list of children to be taught under the contract, giving names, ages, and number of miles to contract school.
