- This series consists of two lists of commissioners appointed by the Supreme Court to take affidavits to be read in that court and in the Court of Exchequer. Each list has names of commissioners and the date of appointment. The dates on the first list span the years 1788-1798; on the second, 1797-1800. Some names are struck out. Appointment of Supreme Court commissioners was authorized by a law of 1788.

- This series consists mostly of records generated by New York City courts during the 19th Century including the Mayor's Court; Court of Common Pleas; Superior Court; Justice Courts and Police Court. Records include depositions, petitions of imprisoned debtors for release, insolvent assignments, summonses, complaints, judgment rolls, affidavits, writs of fieri facias and payments. Also included are vouchers and payroll records that were audited by the New York City Department of Finance. Records are closed pending arrangement.

- These records documenting pleadings of plaintiffs and defendants in common law actions include declarations of plaintiffs, defendant's pleas, replications, rejoinders, surrejoinders, cognovits, demurrers, reports of referees, reports of damages awarded, and writs of inquiry. The series contains plaintiffs' declarations, which were the initial pleadings in common law actions. The declaration was made out by the plaintiff's attorney after the defendant had been arrested by a writ of capias ad respondendum.

- This series contains writs of error and related documents; writs of habeas corpus; and a single writ of certiorari. All of the writs of error were directed to the Court of Common Pleas for the City and County of New York. Several of the writs of habeas corpus concerned custody of minors. Two writs of habeas corpus post date the reorganization of the Supreme Court in 1847. A few of the writs include the return to the writ (the response of the lower court).

Each entry in the docket book gives the following information: name of party against whom judgment was obtained, name of party in whose favor judgment was obtained, amount of debt, amount of damages and costs, date of signing judgment (omitted in later volumes), date of filing judgment roll, name of attorney for losing party, and date of satisfaction if any.

- This series consists mostly of orders of Circuit Judges granting or denying motions for new trails after hearing arguments on a bill of exceptions in which a defendant alleged error in earlier proceedings. There are also a few orders granting judgment as in the case of non-suit, giving additional time to plead, setting aside a default, etc. The powers of circuit judges were specified in legislation of 1829.

- The rough minute books contain minutes of civil trials and other proceedings in regular terms of the Circuit Court and in additional "sittings" in the city and county of New York. Trial minutes include the names of plaintiff and defendant, attorneys, jurors, and witnesses, and may list documents introduced as evidence. The minutes state the amount of money judgment awarded by jury verdict after trial, or by jury inquisition if the defendant defaulted. The minute books also contain occasional entries of motions and orders, and fines against non-appearing jurors.

- The laws of 1830 incorporated the New York Life Insurance and Trust Company and stipulated that the Court of Chancery could appoint this institution as a guardian for infants whose estates yielded an annual income exceeding $100. The court used the Trust Company as a depository for the monies of infants and for other purposes. This series consists of the accounts of infants under the care of a court appointed guardian with the Trust Company.

Each draft opinion gives the volume and page number in which it is entered; the names of the parties in the case; a review of the particulars and proceedings in the case; the Chancellor's opinion on the matters in question; and citations of statutes, reported cases, and legal treaties to support this opinion.
