It gives the names of the defendant and plaintiff; the name, occupation or rank, and residence of the bail (two persons are named, but generally one is fictitious--"John Doe" or "Richard Roe"); and the type of common law action. While this series includes some bail pieces for Albany and Utica, the bulk are found in related series J0096 and J0098.

This series consists of documents constituting the whole proceedings for a case seeking repeal of a letters patent or dissolution of articles of incorporation. Information includes the cases' history, the defendant's defense, statements of facts, actions taken by, and the final judgment of the court. Documents include summonses; plaintiff's complaint; the defendant's answer; court orders; affidavits; and judgment. Each record contains the name of the case, name and location of the court, presiding judge and filing date.

Summary

This series consists of writs of appeal, in Dutch, from judgments made by the courts of New Amsterdam, Oostdurp (Westchester), Heemsteede, New Amstel, Wiltwyck (in the Esopus), Flushing (on Long Island), and Fort Orange. Writs of appeal were granted by the Council of the Colony of New York in response to petitions, usually submitted by one party in a civil action. The records in this series also include summonses and writs of mandamus.

These four small books list the names of attorneys who have appointed agents, the names of their agents, and dates of appointment. The books overlap in date and contents and contain many strikeouts. Agents were authorized to be appointed by rules of the court adopted in January term, 1799, and August term, 1809.

This series consists of appointments of agents, filed by solicitors, with the Clerk of the 2nd Chancery Circuit. Each appointment contains the name of the agent, date of appointment, place of residence, and the signature of the appointing solicitor. The rule of the court required every solicitor in chancery to appoint in writing an agent in every city or town where the Register, Assistant Register, and Chancery Circuit Clerks maintained offices.

This series consists of satisfaction pieces, which are an acknowledgment by a winning party that a judgment in his favor has been satisfied. The acknowledgment is signed by the winning party in a cause (or his attorney) and acknowledged before a judge or commissioner of deeds. The series includes a few powers of attorney and certificates of satisfaction by the clerk of the Supreme Court. The Albany satisfaction pieces after 1839 are missing.

This series consists of original writs (often called writs of summons) issued under seal of the Supreme Court, ordering a sheriff to summon a defendant to appear in court on a given day. Many of the actions involve promissory notes given by banking corporations, but there are also cases involving railroads, churches, schools, and manufacturing and insurance companies.

The special bail piece is a memorandum filed with the court stating that the defendant has been delivered to bail. It gives the names of the defendant and plaintiff; the name, occupation or rank, and residence of the bail (two persons are named, but generally one is fictitious--"John Doe" or "Richard Roe"); and the type of common law action. There are few bail pieces after 1831 because of the liberalization of bail requirements by the Revised Statutes of 1829 and because bail pieces were now customarily included in the judgment rolls.

Summary

This collection contains writs of error filed by the clerk of the Supreme Court of Judicature in New York City. The writ required the judge of a trial court to return a transcript of a judgment and related proceedings to the Supreme Court for review and determination. The writ alleges that "manifest error" occurred during pleading or trial. About two-thirds of this series consists of writs of error unaccompanied by transcripts, while the remainder of the series includes both the writ and the transcript of the judgment and proceedings in the trial court.

This series consists of information on motorists convicted of violating Article 11 of the Highway Law, pertaining to driver licensing, motor vehicle registration, public highway use, and motor vehicle speed. Information includes the name, address, section of the highway law violated, sentence and location, dates of judgment. The Secretary of State used this to determine whether a license or registration would be revoked or renewal would be denied. This record series is arranged alphabetically by last name.

This series consists of a rough chronological list of wills relating to estates in the First Senatorial District (New York and adjacent counties) that were transferred to the New York County Surrogate's Court when the Court of Probates moved to Albany in 1799. Information include name of testator, residence, and date of will. At the end of the main list are other lists of documents transferred, such as inventories, accounts of administrators, etc.
