Chapter 329 of the Laws of 1854 appropriated $2,250,000 in state funds to provide for the enlargement of the Erie, Oswego, Cayuga, and Seneca Canals; the completion of the Black River and Genesee Valley Canals; and the enlargement of the locks of the Champlain Canal. This series consists of one volume of abstracts of contract proposals pertaining to the enlargement of the Erie Canal and one volume pertaining to the enlargement of the locks of the Champlain Canal.

Superintendents of Repairs' measurements of water depth

Summary
This series from the Comptroller's Office consists of monthly measurements of the water depth in canals taken every four miles on their sections, or at one point if a section was less than two miles long. The report includes measurement location, actual depth of water by measure, and an affidavit that the data are correct. The series is fragmentary. Also included is a table of soundings on the entire canal between Buffalo and Troy.

The correspondence deals with the transmittal of monthly estimates, weekly reports, contract progress photographs, work force distribution sheets, abstracts, vouchers, and monthly concrete reports. None of these records themselves are contained in this series.

This series consists of a report to Governor's Commission to Investigate Canal Frauds concerning repairs made to the Chemung Canal Feeder after a break that occurred in the freshet of April 19, 1870. The report charges contractor Jarvis Lord with excessive hiring at unnecessary cost to the state. Attached are copies of depositions, letters, receipts, and statements of labor performed and materials furnished.
