- This series contains an inventory of the approximately 1,900 "blue line" maps produced by the State Engineer and Surveyor pursuant to Chapter 199, Laws of 1910 and Chapter 51, Laws of 1917. The maps inventoried depict all state owned lands and property prior to improvements effected for the Barge Canal System; the location of state property appropriated for the Barge Canal; and the location of the old canals and related state property in relation to the Barge Canal.

- This series consists of field notes from surveys made for the Canal Commissioners (Revised Statutes 1827), which directed that the Commissioners have maps and field notes made for all canals constructed by the state. Field notes in this series were submitted by the Canal Commissioners to the Canal Board for approval, and upon approval were certified by the commissioners and filed in the Comptroller's Office. The Erie, Chenango, Chemung, Crooked Lake, Cayuga and Seneca, and Oswego canals are covered.

- This series contains maps, photographs, diagrams, and charts illustrating construction and improvement projects done on state highways and waterways. The records depict proposed work and work in progress and include photographs of natural features, damaged or repaired structures, and work sites. Records also include maps showing work progress and possible locations for improved roads; hydrographs of monthly water discharge levels; plans and designs for structures; and sketches of soil depth and composition.

- This series consists of approximately 1000 shop drawings, which were used in conjunction with individual Barge Canal contracts to produce detailed specifications. The maps are primarily on linen and contain a great level of detail; from these plans contractors and manufacturers were able to fulfill specific terms of contracts. Included are shop drawings for the components of bridges, locks, gates, dams, winch cars, and other canal mechanisms. Also included in this series are shop drawings for four maintenance contracts.

Depicted are the water level, condition of the canal bottom, and the proposed improvement configuration.

These tracings show the relative positions of the Erie Canal and the later Enlarged Canal, and include names of property owners.

- This series consists of linen plans and drawings for contracts authorized by New York State and funded by the federal government. Under terms of a 1935 state-federal agreement, New York State was able to accept federal aid for improvements to the Barge Canal System without transferring the canals to the federal government. As contracts were completed, the federal government reimbursed the state. The project was known as the Hudson to Great Lakes Waterway and the contracts became popularly known as "U.S." contracts.
