- This series consists of correspondence, special and general orders, morning reports, descriptive lists, and ordnance returns pertaining to commands held by Brigadier General James Gibson in the state's National Guard. The bulk of the series post-dates the Civil War and concerns Gibson's command of the 12th Brigade of the Third Division. The series also contains a small amount of material concerning Gibson's command of the 30th New York State National Guard between 1862 and 1865.

- This series consists of printed copies of general and special orders issued by the Adjutant General's Office between 1861 and 1862. The series also contains a small quantity of certificates of enrollment issued to state militia officers in 1864. Finally, this series contains a small quantity of correspondence of Adjutant General William Fuller dating between 1823 and 1824.

- This series consists of copies of incoming correspondence directed to Governor Edwin D. Morgan, originally found in Inspector General's administrative correspondence files. The Executive Chamber probably forwarded these copies to the Inspector General in order to keep him informed of current events or because they dealt with matters which required his attention. One of the Inspector General's major responsibilities was to attend to the organization of the militia, which is what the bulk of this correspondence is concerned with.

- This series consists mostly of military appeals addressed to Adjutant General Beck or to Governors Van Buren and Throop concerning disputed elections of officers in the various units of the New York State Militia. Also included are statistical abstracts of inspection returns, which give numbers of officers and enlisted men present and absent, as well as the quality of arms and accoutrements, cannon and equipment, implements for loading and firing, and ammunition inspected and approved or found unfit for service.
