This series contains mostly correspondence but also some accounts, essays, and related records documenting Daniel Tompkins' public and private life from his college years through his term as vice president. Included are letters from Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Martin Van Buren, DeWitt Clinton, and Henry Dearborn. Records relate to the War of 1812; appointments; Indians; political disputes; state prison administration; slavery; John Jacob Astor's arrest for treason; morality issues; and Tompkins' finances and property. These records are restricted due to damage.

Additional material includes bills for repair and storage of small arms; memoranda concerning state military accounts; certificates of employment of clerks in the adjutant general's office; War of 1812 claim number 16,273; and a few claims for the state campaign badge awarded for military service during the Spanish-American War.

This series consists of two volumes of outgoing correspondence sent from the Adjutant General's office to officers of New York militia units, other military personnel, and Governors Daniel D. Tompkins and William L. Marcy. A significant amount of correspondence covers Governor Tompkins's effort to mobilize state resources at the beginning of the War of 1812 and the state's effort in 1846 to organize volunteers to fight in the Mexican War.
