This series consists mainly of field books compiled in the field while surveying, constructing, or maintaining the State's canal system. Topics addressed include land ownership and property valuations; property monuments; topography; proposed layouts; bridge inspections; highway locations; daily progress; property deeds; and town and state boundary line surveys. In addition to notes and measurements, many of the field books contain inventories; reports and observations; sketches of various areas and building measurements; property valuations; and deed descriptions.

The series consists of plans, correspondence, graphs, and maps relating to arterial highway planning in 38 cities throughout New York. It was the state's intention to integrate arterial highways in the state highway system and cost share with the federal government for the construction and maintenance of the system, with the remainder of costs for required rights of way assumed by the city. Files are organized by city.

This series consists of estimate about the Erie Canal enlargements near or at Little Falls, New York. Computations usually have headings of the section surveyed and a description of the structure or site for which measurements are given. Also included are small drawings/cross-sectional diagrams of lining ditches behind the canal wall throughout the records. Information typically includes station number; sounding measurements of river; distances from/to canal (longitudinal and transverse) and water levels at river.
