The series consists of blueprint maps and descriptions of lands permanently appropriated for use of state canals. The blueprints, arranged by district, are tracings of maps of land appropriations along the Erie Canal in Wayne County (District No. 3) and Monroe and Orleans counties (District No. 4). Each map provides name of person from whom land was appropriated; town and county where located; symbols indicating gas pipe monuments; and a written survey description of the appropriated land.

The series consists of blueprint maps and descriptions of lands temporarily appropriated by New York State for use in constructing, improving, and maintaining state canals. The maps were prepared by the Office of the State Engineer and Surveyor as part of its responsibilities in surveying, mapping, and engineering the state's canals. Temporarily appropriated lands were taken by the state for use and returned to the landowner after work on the canal was completed.
