Summary
The Committee on Canals of New York State was a special body established by order of Governor Theodore Roosevelt in order to plan for the modernization of the state's canal system, culminating in the construction of the Barge Canal. Most of the correspondence found in this series was sent to and/or received from individuals involved in transportation, construction, or commerce. Subjects include descriptions of waterway construction and transportation; port commerce; prices of construction materials; lock conditions; and canal boats.

This series contains documents in support of policy discussions to revive a project for an American canal from Lake Ontario to the Niagara River and Lake Erie. Information was needed to establish economic justification and/or engineering feasibility of constructing/improving the canal, and estimates cost. Records include maps, photographs, pamphlets, clippings, correspondence, and notes pertaining to canal construction or improvement and waterpower.

This series consists of aerial stereo photographs documenting the New York State Barge Canal from Waterford to Oswego. The photographs were taken for use in planning for the 1935 Federal Improvement to the Barge Canal System. Portions of the 19th-century Erie Canal alignments are also visible.

Summary
These series consists of survey data from a 1901 report on the Barge Canal from the Hudson River to the Great Lakes by Edward Bond, the State Engineer and Surveyor, and a color map of the proposed alternatives of Cohoes and vicinity to accompany the report. The map was compiled from the surveys of the U.S. Board of Engineers on Deep Waterways, from canal surveys, and a local map of the city of Troy.

The series consists of computational studies, emphasizing hydrological data, for canal construction and the effect of the canal system on adjacent property. Records include: survey computations; baseline data; a revised estimate of quantities and cost for enlarging the canal through the western division; material relating to the canal at Clyde, Newark, and Lyons such as engineers' report on damage claims and newspaper briefs on Clyde River floods; and base line survey computations from Hurds Bridge to Sulphur Guard Lock.
