Various colored lines represents the existing canal bed; proposed improvements; and water level of the canal. Represented are parts of the middle and western division of the Erie and Oswego canals, along with several prominent feeders.

The records date from the first canal enlargement through to the start of the canal improvements that became known as the Barge Canal system.

- This series consists of an incomplete card file that apparently indexes Erie Canal surveys, construction, and/or claims for damage. It may be part may be an index to Middle Division field books (found in series B0730, Engineer's Field Books Pertaining to the Construction of the State's Canal System). Many references are to the period of the second canal enlargement (so-called "9 Million Improvement") in 1896. There are also references to canal feeders and ancillary canals associated with the canal enlargement of 1835-1841.

- This series consists of 64 charts and maps of the Erie Canal from Waterford to Buffalo, and of the Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca canals. They were seemingly prepared by the Department of Public Works to aid ships or boats in navigating canal waterways. Navigation charts are mixed with survey maps perhaps to aid production of charts for additional uncharted canal areas.

- This series from the Comptroller's Office consists of monthly measurements of the water depth in canals taken every four miles on their sections, or at one point if a section was less than two miles long. The report includes measurement location, actual depth of water by measure, and an affidavit that the data are correct. The series is fragmentary. Also included is a table of soundings on the entire canal between Buffalo and Troy.

- The land appropriation files contain comprehensive legal documentation of the process by which the state acquired lands for the Barge Canal system (pursuant to Laws of 1909, Chapter 391, as amended), and of the state's title to those lands. The files document not only the transfer of legal title to the state (i.e. the deed), but also the title and lien history of the property, the negotiations with the landowner, and the review and approval by control agencies - Offices of the State Comptroller and Attorney General. All of this documentation is important for confirming that due process was observed and that the owner was justly, fairly compensated for the property taken by the state. In addition, the records thoroughly document an important government function, the appropriation of private property for a public purpose, in this case for the Barge Canal.
