- This series consists of original linen plans and drawings delineating maintenance contracts assigned for the New York State Barge Canal System. After the completion of the Barge Canal System in the mid-1920's, appropriations were authorized for the maintenance and operations of the system. Contract maps usually include a location map or map and title sheet and itemized drawings of contract specifications.

- This series consists of hand-drawn cross sectional diagrams produced to determine conditions and needed improvements to the Erie Canal. The diagrams show conditions of the canal bed and riparian decay in portions of the western division of the canal, beginning at Lock 52 at the Wayne County line and ending at the Black Rock Guard Lock. Depicted are the water level, condition of the canal bottom, and the proposed improvement configuration.

- This series consists of drawings, blueprints, plans, diagrams, tracings, and maps relating primarily to the state's canal system. Virtually all the state's canals are represented, but the series is particularly strong with respect to the Barge Canal system. Also included is a map of the Genesee Valley Canal Extension from Olean to Mill Grove Pond apparently created by William Rumble from an earlier David Vaughan map. Records are restricted due to severe fire and water damage.

- This series consists of approximately 1900 original linen maps produced by the State Engineer and Surveyor. The maps are popularly known as "Blue Line," "Laws of 1910 Maps," and "Abandonment Maps." - These monthly and bi-monthly abstracts, check rolls, and vouchers were submitted to the Canal Commissioners by Superintendents of Repairs. Arranged by canal starting with Erie, then chronologically by year, and alphabetical by name of Superintendent of Repairs, the records provide detailed information on labor performed (including laborers' names and wages) and expenditures on construction or repair projects on the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, Cayuga and Seneca, Chemung, Crooked Lake, Chenango, Genesee Valley, and Black River canals.

- This series contains general correspondence files relating to the planning and implementation of the Mutual Aid Plan for Highway Repair and Debris Clearance in the event of a wartime emergency. The War Council's Highway Repair and Debris Clearance Committee developed a plan patterned after London's system which designated a site for a central pool of equipment and personnel that would be available on short notice to a stricken area.

- The series consists of film (nitrate) negatives of canal sites and structures which represent the first general use of photography by the state's canal departments. The negatives were apparently prepared as part of a systematic documentation of structural problems with the canal, especially in the eastern division. The images are vital to the interpretation of the foundation materials and construction used for support of canal structures, especially at Schoharie Crossing.
