The bulk of this series consists of resignations and removals of elected and appointed public officers that were filed in the Secretary of State's office pursuant to Chapter 126 of the Laws of 1850, which stipulated that written resignations were to be submitted and signed by the incumbent. Also included are records concerning investigations and hearings dealing with possible malfeasance, such as the impeachment of Governor William Sulzer. Sulzer documents include articles of impeachment in the Assembly, proceedings of the Court for the Trial of Impeachments (composed of the Senate and judges of the Court of Appeals), and the court's judgment removing Governor Sulzer from office.
