The card index may have been compiled as a general subject index to Court of Appeals decisions. Most of the information in the index is not unique, being available in published case reports, legal digests, encyclopedias, and in newspapers. - This series consists mostly of orders of Circuit Judges granting or denying motions for new trails after hearing arguments on a bill of exceptions in which a defendant alleged error in earlier proceedings. There are also a few orders granting judgment as in the case of non-suit, giving additional time to plead, setting aside a default, etc. The powers of circuit judges were specified in legislation of 1829.

- The rough minute books contain minutes of civil trials and other proceedings in regular terms of the Circuit Court and in additional "sittings" in the city and county of New York. Trial minutes include the names of plaintiff and defendant, attorneys, jurors, and witnesses, and may list documents introduced as evidence. The minutes state the amount of money judgment awarded by jury verdict after trial, or by jury inquisition if the defendant defaulted. The minute books also contain occasional entries of motions and orders, and fines against non-appearing jurors.

- The files in this series document administrative proceedings that Department of Health program units or the Bureau of Administrative Hearings are not able to settle without a hearing. Cases involve sanitary code conditions, Medicaid, professional medical conduct, nursing home discharges/transfers, emergency medical services, WIC benefits, and patient abuse. Files include hearing transcripts, motions, intermediate rulings, proposed findings and exceptions, and orders rendered. Series also contains index files that include summary of proceedings, findings of fact, and transcripts for every case that is heard by the judges.

- Case files of investigations of professional medical conduct: charge must be disclosed if a committee of the State Board for Professional Medical Conduct concurred that a hearing was warranted and the committee voted unanimously to make the charge public; the subsequent findings, conclusions, determinations and final order must be disclosed. See Public Health Law section 230.10(a)(iv) and 230.10(d). Related investigation files are confidential and are not disclosable. See Public Health Law section 230.10(a)(v). Other materials in the files that are exempt from disclosure include privileged attorney-client communications and attorney work product or material prepared for litigation, under Civil Practice Law and Rules section 3101(b) and (c); and inter- or intra-agency materials with certain exceptions, under FOIL sect. 87.2(g).
- All case files: disclosable under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL, Public Officers Law Art. 6), except for materials that are exempt from disclosure by FOIL section 87.2(a) ("specifically exempted from disclosure by state or federal statute"), section 87.2(b) (disclosure would result in an "unwarranted invasion of personal privacy"), and section 87.2(g) (intra- and inter-agency materials, with certain exceptions).

- Collection contains writs of arrest and a small number of other writs, issued out of the Supreme Court of Judicature. Over ninety percent of the documents are writs of capias ad respondendum, ordering a sheriff to arrest a civil defendant, thereby bringing him into the court's custody to answer the plaintiff's declaration of claim. Also present are writs of fieri facias and writs of capias ad satisfaciendum, ordering a sheriff to execute a civil judgment, and other writs for special purposes. At the end of the series are a few writs issued by the Court of Chancery, 1810-1813.

- This series contains issue rolls, which contain all the same parts and information as judgment rolls up to and including the award of writ of venire facias juratores. (See finding aids for Series J0134, J0137, and J0140.) The issue roll was prepared only for important cases tried at the bar of the Supreme Court of Judicature. (A nisi prius roll was drawn up for causes tried on the circuit.)
