- This collection contains writs of error filed by the clerk of the Supreme Court of Judicature in New York City. The writ required the judge of a trial court to return a transcript of a judgment and related proceedings to the Supreme Court for review and determination. The writ alleges that "manifest error" occurred during pleading or trial. About two-thirds of this series consists of writs of error unaccompanied by transcripts, while the remainder of the series includes both the writ and the transcript of the judgment and proceedings in the trial court.

Most of the documents are pleadings by plaintiffs and defendants, bonds, draft rules, and affidavits. Criminal case documents include indictments, informations, etc., almost entirely for the period 1753-1795.

- This series includes documents relating to the assignment and sale of property of insolvent debtors who petitioned for relief, or the attachment and sale of property of "absconding, concealed, or non-resident debtors" in response to the petition of creditors. Most of the petitions were directed to the Recorder of the City of New York. Other petitions were directed to a justice of the Supreme Court of Judicature. Documents include petitions of debtors and their creditors requesting sale of property; affidavits of creditors; accounts of debts owed to creditors; orders for assignment of property to trustees for sale; and documents discharging the debtors from further liability. Most of the files related to debtors residing in New York City. Some files relate to debtors elsewhere in the state.

Each entry includes name of the party against whom judgment was obtained (usually defendant); name of the party in whose favor judgment was obtained (usually plaintiff); amounts of debt, damages, and costs; date of filing judgment; name of attorney for judgment debtor; and date of satisfaction if any. Amounts are in pounds, shillings, and pence until mid-1797, in dollars and cents thereafter.

- The minute books in this series are the record of proceedings in the regular terms of the Supreme Court of Judicature in New York City (or in other locations during the Revolutionary War). The engrossed minute books are final versions. Rough minute books are usually less complete, but may contain unique information. Until 1797, the minute books contain entries relating to both civil litigation and criminal prosecutions throughout the colony and state. After 1797, the minute books contain mostly entries or lists of legal issues, motions, and appealed cases considered and decided by the court.
