The series consists of tuition records and associated files concerning financial aid to Native American post-secondary students. The bulk of the records are student listings that typically show student name, reservation, home address, school, date of birth (sometimes), percentage of aid used, and grant amounts (by semester). Also include are administrative financial records of the Native American Unit, including budgets, state fund encumbrances, and financial program requests. Records are restricted.

Restricted under the Freedom of Information Law (personal privacy) and FERPA. The restrictions of non-directory student information under FERPA last for 100 years unless a student or parent has signed and filed a waiver allowing disclosure of the record.

This series consists of correspondence, memoranda, project reports, and state plan drafts concerning the education of New York State Indian children as mandated by the Johnson-O'Malley Act of 1934. Also present are correspondences showing the interaction between state and federal governments regarding the formulation of education policy.

Included are curriculum proposals, lesson plans, budget files, contracts, reports, bulletins, and newsletters generated by the Unit, New York Indian schools, experts in Native American education, and the State Education Department. A significant portion of the records document the administration of Title IV of the federal Education Amendments of 1972. Files highlight issues affecting Native American education at both the state and national levels.
