The general orders deal with numerous topics pertinent to New York State Militia, Naval Militia, and National Guard units during the War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and various catastrophes and disturbances.

- This volume contains the statistical results of the 1864 enrollment as mandated by legislation of 1862. This enrollment pertains to men eligible for service in the state's National Guard, as opposed to the enrollment of 1862, which recorded men eligible to be drafted into the federal service. Data provided includes district number; and for each town, the total number of men enrolled, exempt, and liable to duty. These figures are then totaled on a county-wide level.

- This series consists of handwritten abstracts of expenditures which, for the most part, detail the names, grades, positions, and salaries paid to individuals serving in the Military Department. Other abstracts provide information on ordnance distributed to various units but these are few in number and differ greatly in content. Offices which submitted abstracts include those of the Surgeon General, Inspector General, Commissary General, Judge Advocate General, Paymaster General, and Quartermaster General.

- This series consists of printed forms submitted by the clerks of county boards of supervisors to the Adjutant General's Office detailing the number of men liable to perform military duty. County assessment rolls were used to produce the returns which contain the following information: name of town or number of ward; number of persons enrolled belonging to fire companies; number of persons liable to perform military duty not belonging to military or fire companies; total number enrolled; and remarks.

- This series includes correspondence primarily between militia leaders and occasionally their subordinates. One can find a number of telegrams and letters addressed to Major General Josiah Porter in Albany, Governor Roswell P. Flower, and Brigadier Generals Peter Doyle and James McLeer. The content of these telegrams and letters centers on the mobilization of state militia troops at Buffalo, but many also contain descriptions of the chaos erupting in the city.

Sometimes additional remarks detail service overseas, promotions, or service conduct.

- This series consists of correspondence, reports, copies of financial statements, and other records concerning the celebration of New York Day at the Chicago World's Fair; the dedication of the Trenton, New Jersey Battle Monument at Van Cortlandt Park; and the dedication of the New York State Monument at Gettysburg. The bulk of the series deals with the latter event and consists mainly of materials prepared by A.J. Zabriskie, the Engineer and Secretary of the New York Monuments Commission.

- This series consists almost entirely of duplicate correspondence and special orders dating between May and August 1861. In addition, there are a few items dating from 1862 and one document dating from 1866. These are mainly copies of bills, vouchers and ordnance inventories. The correspondence in this series deals almost exclusively with the organization and supply of volunteer units raised by the state in response to President Lincoln's call for men in 1861.

Each roll also lists names of men gained or lost since the last annual muster, by discharge, promotion, expulsion, transfer, removal, desertion, or death.
