- All visitors to the institution were required to sign in. These volumes list the name, city, state or country of each visitor. Visitors included legislators, jurors, students, teachers, professors, and members of the state legislature. Most visitors were from the New York City area; others included 25 other states, Washington D.C., Latin America, the West Indies, Canada, Europe, India, China, and Japan.

- This committee met periodically with the Superintendent to review matters concerning inmate apprenticeships. Minutes document committee actions on the: review of applications from prospective master ( include applicant's name and relationship to the inmate, inmate's name, case number and committee's decision); review of the master's conduct reports for apprenticed inmates; requests by masters to absolve indentures; attempts to recover runaway inmates; rules governing apprenticeships; and review of parole requests.

- This typescript volume instructs inmates working as clerks in their duties and responsibilities. General instructions urge courtesy, obedience, discretion, etc. Specific instructions regarding filling out forms, carrying messages, updating records, and other duties instruct clerks working for: the Assistant Superintendent; the Military Instructor; the Dentist; the Oculist; and the Night Count (recording the nightly inmate census).

- This volume, kept for the auditing and accounting purposes of the New York House of Refuge, documents the receipts and disbursements of the Industrial Department. Following the legislative prohibition of prison contract labor, the institution in 1888 effected a major reorganization and expansion of industrial and mechanical trades education. This volume records payments made by the Department and receipts generated by its industries.

- These volumes list information about persons to whom reformatory inmates were bound out. Information includes master's name and address; inmate's number; and date of indenture agreement. In addition the first volume (1825-1845) lists the master's occupation, the second volume (1860-1873) lists the inmate's name, and the third volume (1869-1903) lists the inmate's name and a reference to the master's prior experience with indentured inmates.

- These volumes contain contractual agreements between the reformatory managers, inmates, and employers for indentured labor or apprenticeships. Contracts specified the employer must teach a trade, literacy and arithmetic; provide food, clothing, shelter, and, end of the apprenticeship terms. Inmates could not be hired out and the agreement could be not canceled without reformatory's consent. Contracts include agreement date; master's name, address, and occupation; inmate's name, age, case number; the type of trade to be taught; and apprenticeship duration.

- These volumes, kept for the auditing purposes of the New York House of Refuge's Finance Committee and Executive Committee, document the expenses incurred by the Industrial Department. Following the legislative prohibition of prison contract labor, the institution in 1888 effected a major reorganization and expansion of industrial and mechanical trades education. Payments were made to payroll, the Industrial Education Association, and other organizations and private individuals; however, except in the case of payroll, there is no indication of what the payments were for.

- The New York House of Refuge was the first juvenile reformatory in the United States. During its existence from 1825 to 1935, the institution implemented many innovative programs for the detention, education, and rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents. This series contains detailed information, including personal, family, and criminal history, regarding each inmate (male and female) admitted to the institution.

- Inmate case records are generally disclosable 75 years after date of discharge, but some information in case records of any date may be exempt from disclosure pursuant to Freedom of Information Law, or FOIL (Public Officers Law, Article 6), sect. 84-90; and Personal Privacy Protection Law, or PPPL (Public Officers Law, Article 6-A), sect. 91-99. For this reason, microfilm containing case records less than 100 years old is not available through interlibrary loan.

Information in the daily reports includes name and number of parolee visited; city and/or home address of parolee; relatives' comments on parolee's progress; name and location of employer and employer's comments concerning parolee and descriptions of parolee crimes or misbehavior. Some entries provide information on parole agent activities such as taking inmates to court; helping find employment; and arrests while on parole visits.

Summary
- This series documents expenses of the House of Refuge and were kept for the Executive Committee monthly audit of bills. Bills for each month included the following information: bill number; payee name; date and amount of bill; and total amount of bills for the month. Following the audit, a committee member signed an endorsement under the list of bills stating that they have been audited and a warrant issued for payment of the bills (no endorsements after August 1925).
