Summary
Lantern slides were compiled as instructional aids for the public school curriculum. More than 20,000 unique images dating from 1856-1939 document a wide variety of subjects, including New York State, North American and world geography, history, natural sciences, fine arts, trades, industries, education, and schools. This series consists of glass plate negatives and positive transparencies, plus a few film negatives, which were collected and reviewed for the possible use in the production of educational lantern slides.

Thousands of slides were produced by the Division of Visual Instruction and sets of slides were loaned to schools throughout the State from 1886 to 1939.

This series consists of copies of the printed annual report of the Division of Visual Instruction, which summarize the division's activities during the previous year and include descriptions of new publications. Some reports provide background of the division and use of lantern slides. Also included are copies of a departmental Handbook that outlines the functions of the division, availability of lantern slides for loan, and photo prints depicting the Division of Visual Instruction's offices.

Summary
Rudolph Raffius was a Hungarian-born photographer who traveled the world in the early twentieth century capturing images for reproduction and use in visual classroom instruction. Raffius used the notebooks in this series to catalog and describe negatives that he provided to the New York State Division of Visual Instruction (DVI). Each notebook entry includes a brief description of the image, location where photographed, date photographed, and negative number assigned by Raffius.
