- The maps in this series appear to have been created by the Office of Surveyor General in compliance with legislation of 1827 requiring a complete map and field notes. Most of the maps depict specific sections of the Erie Canal and show locks; bridges; railroad bridges across canals; locations of canal alterations and improvements; aqueducts; and reservoirs and feeders. The series also includes maps relating to the Chemung, Chenango, Sodus, Oneida Lake, Champlain, and Cayuga and Seneca canals.

- Quit rents were a remnant of feudal dues that were levied during both the colonial and early statehood periods. Quit rents were very unpopular and were finally abolished by the Constitution of 1846. This series consists of certificates (printed forms) that document payments and commutation of annual quit rents. Type of information provided is consistent throughout the series, including patent number; payee; patentee; lot number or other description; acreage; amount, interest, and total paid; and date of certificate.

That law states that every municipal corporation shall annually make a report of its financial condition to the state comptroller, and that such reports shall be made by the chief fiscal officer of the municipal corporation. Both reports consist of a chronological table of ashes inspected during the year, giving for each shipment of ashes the head mark (firm name or initials), number of barrels of potash scrapings, and fee charged; a "recapitulation" is at the end.

- This series consists of affidavits stating the grounds for cancellation of a Comptroller's tax sale. Grounds for cancellation were prior payment of taxes, erroneous tax assessment, or occupancy of the premises sold. The affidavits of occupancy include descriptions of farming or lumbering on the parcel sold. From the 1880's on the series also includes applications for cancellation of a tax sale and Comptroller's orders for cancellation.
