Craft a Search
Finding Aids include descriptions of records, and contents lists for selected records of New York State agencies and governors that are held by the New York State Archives.
Searches are not case sensitive.
Search
Use the search bar on the landing page or the search bar in the navigation menu at the top of the search results screen to perform a full text search.
This basic search will return full length finding aids or series as results which can be sorted and filtered.
Advanced Search
Start an advanced search by selecting “Advanced Search” on the navigation menu at the top of the screen. Advanced search results can be sorted and further refined by filtering results.
Refine advanced searches with adding additional search terms by clicking the + button to add a new line to your search.
Advanced Search options include:
- Title
- Full Text
- Series Number
- Corporate Names
- Geographic Names
- Subjects
- Personal Names
- Terms (Genre)
The Advanced Search will return results at various levels of the Finding Aid description including the series, file, and item level.
Browse
Browse available finding aids by selecting “Browse” on the navigation menu at the top of the screen. Browse results can be sorted and further refined by filtering the results.
Filtering Results
After performing a search, users can filter the returned results by using the facets on the left side of the screen. The number to the right of each filter link shows the number of results.
Results can be filtered by:
- Level of Description
- Subjects
- Corporate Names
- Personal Names
- Date
Sorting Results
After performing a search, users can sort the returned results by selecting the type of sort from the “Sort by” drop down above the search results.
Results can be sorted by:
- Relevance
- Title (A to Z)
- Title (Z to A)
- Creator (A to Z)
- Creator (Z to A)
