Administrative History
The Labor Bureau conducts affirmative investigations into violations of labor laws in New York State (Labor Law, Article 6, 8, and 28). When court action is necessary to stop repeated violations and to secure wages owed to affected workers, the Attorney General, through the bureau, may sue employers in court. In addition, the bureau defends the New York State Department of Labor when it is sued. Generally, this occurs when the Department of Labor concludes that a business has violated the law, and the business sues to have the decision overturned. The bureau also defends decisions of the Workers Compensation Board and the Unemployment Appeals Board.
