Alphabetical by plaintiff name, either surname and given name, or corporation name. Multiple plaintiffs in a case are indexed individually. Documents in criminal cases and claims by the sovereign are indexed under "King" (colonial period) or "People" (statehood period).
Scope and Content Note
This card index provides access to documents (mostly on parchment, some on paper) filed by clerks of the Supreme Court of Judicature and Court of Chancery. Most of the indexed documents are Supreme Court judgment rolls. Other indexed documents include Supreme Court bonds, writs, and criminal indictments, as well as Court of Chancery documents. An index card for a case document contains the names of plaintiff and defendant, name of court, type of action or proceeding, date of filing, and reference to the document code (year-letter-number).
