Scope and Content Note
This series contains agendas, bulletins, clippings, correspondence, guidelines, memorandums, notes, pamphlets, press releases, reports, and speeches generated by the Office of Public Health (OPH). Covering the years 1969-1987, this series reflects the Office's reactions to a number of growing health concerns, including the early days of the AIDS outbreak. The records document the Office's approach to understanding the disease; to understanding the social implications for the Haitian and gay communities; and to providing the public and state government with accurate and up-to-date information.
Other topics documented by the records include: environmental toxicology, maternal and child health, New York City shelters, health manpower, and human experimentation. Significant correspondents include: New York City Mayor Ed Koch, Governor Mario Cuomo, New York State Health Commissioner David Axelrod, Special Assistant to the Commissioner of the Department of Health for Health Planning William Leavy, and Associate State Health Commissioner for New York City Affairs Linda Ann Randolph.
