Administrative History
Laws of 1786, Chapter 23 authorized the exemption of Revolutionary War veterans from paying quit rents, or taxes on their land, during their time of service. The certificates of exemption from quit rents were directed to Gerardus Bancker, who was the treasurer of New York during this period.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of certificates signed by judges of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas in Montgomery County, Albany County, Richmond County, Westchester County, and Ulster County, stating that residents therein were obliged to leave their farms in order to participate in the late war between the United States and Great Britain. The records provide the name of the judge issuing the certificate, the name of the farmer, the location of his farm, and the signature of the judge.
