Administrative History
Ivan P. Vamos served as deputy commissioner of Planning and Operations from 1978 to 1993, under Commissioner Orin Lehman in the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The unit oversaw planning, engineering and development work, land acquisition, environmental analysis, and special studies and research for the state parks, recreational and historical sites. Upon Deputy Commissioner Vamos' retirement in 1993, the role of Deputy Commissioner of Planning and Operations ceased to exist. The duties were transferred to Assistant Commissioner Dominic Jacangelo and between Julia Stokes (Deputy Commissioner of Operations) and Edward Wankel (Deputy Commissioner of Operations for Long Island and New York City).
Scope and Content Note
This series was generated by the office of Deputy Commissioner Ivan P. Vamos, and contains a wide variety of records related to the operations and future planning in the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). Correspondence, memoranda and notes received by the Governor's office and distributed to OPRHP include citizen suggestions for projects at state parks or historical sites. Correspondence files from members of the State Legislature and state agencies, such as the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health, document collaboration on OPRHP activities.
In addition, the files contain copies of deeds, geological surveys, research studies/reports, and environmental analyses on lands acquired or transferred by OPRHP. Examples of transfers from this time period include the acquisition of lands at Minnewaska and a proposed exchange of 278 acres at Montauk Air Force Station (formerly Camp Hero) to the U.S. Department of the Interior for 138.4 acres on Fire Island in the Long Island area.
There are also records relating to the operations of parks, recreation and historic sites such as evaluations of storm damage, environmental issues and repairs. Other subjects include trail maintenance, problems with Canadian geese, canopies, sign repairs, and maintenance of bridges and roads leading to and from state parks. Also included are assessment studies and correspondence for work at Irondequoit Bay Outlet in the Rochester area. Other records include copies of testimonies of public hearings at the State Capitol and committee records.
