This series consists of microfilm copies of New York-related material found in a larger collection of Revolutionary War records compiled by the United States War Department. The New York-related documents form part of a subset of the War Department Collection of Revolutionary War Records designated "miscellaneous numbered records", commonly known as the "Manuscript File". The miscellaneous numbered records pertain generally to military operations, service of individuals, and settlement of accounts related to military service or provision of supplies or other services required by the military.
New York records include accounts of officers and enlisted men; certificates concerning assignment of pay, receipt of money, issuance of letters of administration, performance of service, and nonindebtedness of officers; pay orders and correspondence concerning pay and settlement of accounts; powers of attorney; receipts for pay and supplies; appointments and resignations of officers; petitions to the state legislature for pay; enlistment papers; and lists of certificates issued for pay.
Also included are returns of provisions, correspondence, accounts, military orders, orders for delivery of supplies, receipts for supplies and money, and other records removed from pension application files of New York servicemen.

Custodial History
The United States War Department obtained the "miscellaneous numbered" Revolutionary War records (The Manuscript File) from a variety of sources over a period spanning from 1894 to 1937. The three principal sources included other executive departments of the federal government, individual state governments, and private citizens. A significant portion of the New York-related records were borrowed from the New York State Comptroller's Office and copied by the War Department's Record and Pension Office in 1896. This date is significant because these records later suffered extensive damage and losses in the New York State Capitol building fire of 1911. The copies created by the War Department constitute the only surviving copies of many documents destroyed in the 1911 fire.
