The writ of certiorari ("to be ascertained") ordered a lower court to send to the Supreme Court of Judicature the record of proceedings in a case, prior to final judgment. The writ was issued usually because of some error in the lower court proceedings. The cases were then adjudicated in the Supreme Court.
