Administrative History
The Regents' Inquiry into the Character and Cost of Public Education (1935-1938) was funded by a major grant from the General Education Board and chaired by Regent Owen D. Young, chief executive officer of General Electric. The inquiry was initiated to address what was seen as structural deficiencies in the New York State Education Department in the face of rapidly increasing state involvement in education.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of typescript copies of preliminary, interim, and final reports and supporting documentation produced by the staff of the Regents Inquiry into the Character and Cost of Public Education. The reports contain information on the history of specific aspects of the state education system, the then-current state of education, and recommendations for future action. Many of the reports also include charts, statistical tables, and appendices. Subjects of the reports are widely varied, and include school district organization, financial support for education, adult and vocational education, the use of motion pictures and radio programs for instructional purposes, population trends, school construction, and health education.
