Scope and Content Note
The series consists of transcripts of public hearings conducted by the commission before issuing its reports of studies recommending changes in the state's public pension and retirement systems. The hearings were held in major cities around the state to obtain input from interested parties on the issues under study, and the records document public reaction to the commission's recommendations. The records include stenographic copies of hearing transcripts, along with copies of written statements submitted for each hearing.
The written statements duplicate or support the oral testimony given at the hearings; sometimes testimony was submitted by individuals or organizations not able to appear at the hearings. Also included are some handwritten notes, apparently made by commission members during the course of the hearings.
In addition to the statements and transcripts, the hearing files may typically include: lists of scheduled witnesses and order of testimony; letters to the commission clarifying testimony; mailgrams and other correspondence expressing opinions to the commission; acknowledgment/transmittal letters from the commission to correspondents; notice of hearings sent by the commission, especially for hearings on public employee disability retirement problems; schedules of other commission meetings; and newsclippings.
