Scope and Content Note
This series consists of bonds for the performance of duties executed by Masters in Chancery. A law of 1833 required Masters to execute and deliver to the Chancellor or Vice Chancellor a bond with sufficient surety or sureties for the amount of $5,000 or, if he served in New York City or County, $10,000.
Each bond contains the dates it was executed, approved by the Vice Chancellor, and filed; the names of the Master and his sureties; a statement pledging $5,000 to the people of New York if the Master did not faithfully perform his duty; a signed statement by a witness to the bond that the bond was executed and that the sureties were able to pay it; and a signed statement by the Vice Chancellor approving the bond. Among the Masters' bonds for the 6th Circuit are a small number of oaths of office and bonds for other officers of the court.
