STF records contain population and housing tabulations for geographic areas such as blocks, tracts, counties and states. Each STF is sorted according to a geographic hierarchy defined by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. STFs 1 and 2 contain tabulations based on complete count data. STFs 3, 4, and 5 contain tabulations compiled from sample data.
PUMS files contain records representing a 5% and 1% sample of the entire population. Unlike Summary Tape Files, the unit of analysis for PUMS records is the individual person or housing unit. These records are sorted by geographic area. PUMS files contain the complete range of population and housing information collected in the 1980 Census.
Special tabulations are compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau to meet specific needs for specialized data. The New York State Archives maintains the following special tabulations: Public Law 94-171, County to County Migration Flows, Workers by County of Residence by County of Work, American Indian Supplementary File, Equal Employment Opportunity Special File, Person and Housing Unit Counts for Tracts and Minor Civil Divisions.
