Administrative History
Manfred Ohrenstein, Democrat, represented the 27th District of the County of New York in the State Senate from 1961-1994. Born in Manheim, Germany in 1925, he came to the United States in 1938 and graduated from Columbia Law School with honors in 1951. He served as chairman of the Mental Hygiene Committee in 1965 and as the Minority Leader of the Senate from 1975-1994. He was also active in legislation regarding housing, education, civil rights, and health care.

This series contains the subject and bill files of Manfred Ohrenstein while he was in the State Senate. The subject files consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes, speeches, and other related records pertaining to state elections, civil defense, health, education, mental health, the Democratic Party, civil rights, and housing. Custodial History
These records were transferred to Syracuse University between 1968 and 1977 as a gift from Manfred Ohrenstein. They were later transferred to the New York State Archives in June 2006 and accessioned in 2008.
