Veterans Administration Home (Bath, NY) Registers of Disabled Volunteer Soldiers

The New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home was created to provide care for honorably discharged disabled soldiers or sailors who served in the United States army or navy. Applicants needed to be state residents for at least one year prior to their application for admission. The facility was transferred to the federal government in 1929 and became the Bath Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. In July 1930 the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, the Veterans Bureau, and the Bureau of Pensions were consolidated to form the United States Veterans Administration which maintained oversight of the facility, renamed the Veterans' Administration Home at Bath, NY, and other federal veteran homes and hospitals throughout the country.

This series consists of registers of disabled volunteer soldiers residing at the New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home, later known as the Veterans' Administration Home at Bath, NY. Registers are arranged numerically and divided into the following sections: Military History, Domestic History, and Home History. The Military History section includes date and place of enlistment; company; regiment; discharge date and place; and disabilities when admitted to the home. The Domestic History section contains personal information on each solider, including age; height; hair and eye color; marital status; religion; and occupation. The Home History section includes rate of compensation or pension; date of admission or readmission; conditions of readmission; date of discharge; reason for discharge; date of death; and cause of death.
