Scope and Content Note
This series consists of bound agendas or "calendars" and background memoranda. The Executive Director of the Department of Civil Service, with assistance from Division Directors, prepared these records for the Commission.
Pre-1942 calendars contain a listing of items to be discussed by the Commission arranged by topic or originating D.C.S. division or Commission committee. A notation on the disposition of an item usually appears in the margin (e.g. "Dismissed", "o.k.", "Denied"). Beginning in 1942 an occasional memorandum containing background information and/or recommendations is included with a calendar. Post-1956 calendars include extensive memoranda on almost every item.
A typical calendar contains over one hundred items and covers a wide range of topics, such as: jurisdictional classification, review of temporary and provisional appointments, leaves of absence, extension of eligible lists, selective certification, examination appeals and examinations, waiver of requirements, and review of municipal civil service commission rule changes. Items usually concern an individual case rather than general policy questions.
Department memoranda accompanying calendars contain background information and often include recommendations on items to be determined by the Commission. Memoranda vary in length and detail but sometimes include supporting documentation.
