Scope and Content Note
This series consists of index cards created by the Real Estate Division of the Dept. of Transportation to facilitate access to permits for the use and occupancy of New York State canal lands (series B1790). The cards present, in an abstracted form, similar information to that contained in the permits. Information transcribed on the cards may include: name and address of permittee, date of permit, Dept. of Transportation region, permit number, information on former or superseded permits, terms of permit, permit costs (issuance, per year, renewal, and amendment), a brief description of the action approved by the permit, and if the permit was cancelled or not.
Permits were typically granted to private citizens to build camps or boat docks on canal property; to municipalities to build bridges or other infrastructures; and to private companies to construct gas or other pipelines across or along canal right of way. Accretion B1788-07 of this series specifically contains index entries for permits granted in the Syracuse administrative area, from Oneida Lake to Wayne County.
