Administrative History
The Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Commission (CCQC) was established by executive order of the governor in 1988 to plan events celebrating the 500th anniversary of Columbus' voyage. It was chaired by Matilda Cuomo and operated out of the Governor's Office of Special Projects and Protocol. The final report of the commission was issued in 1993.
Scope and Content Note
The series consists of files created by the commission in the course of planning events and activities to celebrate the Columbus Quincentenary, and some finished products arising from the commission's work. Records include correspondence, programs, newsletters, photographs, and pamphlets documenting events and activities sponsored or promoted by the commission.
Work products of two education projects are also included: a study guide entitled "Italian Americans: Looking Back--Moving Forward," and a curriculum and teacher guide on "Ibero-American Heritage." Of special note are four VHS videocassettes: "Columbus and the Age of Discovery," a Public Broadcasting program (two tapes); "Quincentenary Interfaith Program 1/29/92" (one tape); and one unidentified tape.
