Scope and Content Note
This series consists of photocopies of indexes used by the New York State Canal Corporation and its predecessor agencies for access to material relating to the New York State Barge Canal System. Indexes to contracts typically include contract number, location, canal, division, section and a brief narrative description of the work included in the contract. The series includes indexes to Barge Canal contracts through 1936, maintenance contracts through 1992, terminal contracts through 1936, and U.S. contracts through contract 200 (including contracts not executed). Contract book numbers are included for individual contracts. The final index in the series, "Index to Structures," cross-references location, individual structures (locks, dams, and bridges), residency map number (or sheet number), and contract (barge canal, maintenance, terminal, and U.S.).
The series additionally indexes bridges spanning navigable channels, contracts and rehabilitation projects relating to dams, and special work not included in contracts. Finally, the series indexes beach protection projects on the Atlantic shorefront and Long Island from 1945-1963. The index is arranged by project number and includes beach locations and total costs. The New York State Archives does not hold the material described in this final index.
