Scope and Content Note
Photographic prints and partial negative set of images used for Department publications. Images include crop cultivation, harvesting, and processing; livestock care and inspection; promotional events and meetings; and portraits of Department officials. Laboratories, cattle, beekeeping, onion and lettuce cultivation, inspections and exhibits are particularly well documented. These photographs are the only known general subject photograph file for the Department of Agriculture and Markets. Little specific information about the origin of the series is available. Many of the images, including the oldest pictures in the series, have appeared in published Department reports.
The data most consistently available throughout the file are publication notes. Identification, image description and dates often are lacking, although many prints have short subject designations. To fully identify many images, the researcher must estimate its date and search Department publications for a captioned reproduction. A list of subject headings, alphabetically arranged like the file, provides access to the series. Images are not individually numbered. The publicity photographs are principally black-and-white enlargement prints. Approximately five percent of the prints are color snapshots. There are negatives for approximately forty percent of the prints.
