Administrative History
The Charter Schools Unit is responsible for coordinating the review of charter school applications and proposed charters. The unit makes recommendations to the State Board of Regents regarding the approval or denial of applications and charters. The unit also coordinates the monitoring of charter schools, administers Charter School Planning and Implementation Grants, and provides technical assistance to charter schools.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of documents supporting requests submitted to the Regents to establish charter schools or to renew existing charters, requests which were rejected by the Regents. Included are applications for charters, review materials, correspondence, blueprints for proposed buildings, and comments on the applications and charter requests from SED staff and school district officials. Also included are documentation of the Regents' final actions to deny charters or revoke existing charters, or notification from schools of their withdrawal of applications. Reasons for the denial or revocation of charters include the failure to adhere to the terms of the charter, the failure to adequately address educational standards.
