Administrative History
One of the functions of the Comptroller was to supervise the financial affairs of the state's canals. The Bureau of Canal Affairs, established within the Comptroller's Office in 1883, accomplished this by maintaining accounts of financial transactions relating to the canals.
Scope and Content Note
This series is a record of payments and receipts on accounts of the canals and canal debt. The Comptroller's Office included summary data on these accounts annually in reports to the Commissioners of the Canal Fund.
The volume includes accounts for: lease of surplus canal waters, 1826-1931 (p. 1-36); weigh masters' salaries, 1848-1881 (p. 37-121); enlargement loan and deficiency loans, 1872-1877 (p. 201-207); canal appraisers' and clerks' salaries and expenses, 1857-1882 (p. 271-307); Attorney General, December 1856-January 1857 (no indication of what payments were for) (p. 319); appropriations for clerk hire in office of State Engineer and Surveyor, 1851-1860 (p. 321, 327); services rendered weigh masters, 1855 (p. 323); and salaries and expenses of Canal Commissioners, State Engineer and Surveyor, and Superintendent of Public Works, 1848-1881 (p. 328-355).
Each account provides: account name (name of person, position, or loan); amount paid or received; date of transaction; and service or item for which payment is made or received, e.g. "To lease of surplus water at Port Byron," "Salary," "Miscellaneous Expenses."
