Numeric by district number, then in reverse chronological order. Files of general correspondence, progress reports, and relating to archives of the Protestant Episcopal Church, Diocese of Rochester are at the end of the series.
Administrative History
Until December 1938 the church records inventory was coordinated by the State Director or Assistant State Director of the Survey. After that date a church archives editor was assigned to coordinate the activities of field workers and prepare the results of the inventory for publication.
Scope and Content Note
This series contains correspondence, memoranda, reports, and radio program transcripts concerning the inventory of church archives conducted by the Historical Records Survey.
The correspondence and memoranda are between the editor and Historical Records Survey district supervisors, field workers, members of the clergy, and state WPA administrators. They contain information on the following subjects: scheduling, conduct, and progress of field work; transmittal of inventory forms; irregularities in completed inventory forms; location of church records; access to records and cooperation from churches; secondary sources of historical information on churches; occasionally, historical information on churches; and distribution of published inventories.
Custodial History
Records were transferred to the State Library by the WPA in 1942 and later transferred to Archives as part of old collection #550A, accession number -372.
