Administrative History
The Canal Board was the supreme governing body of the Barge Canal, pursuant to Chapter 147 of the Laws of 1903. The board consisted of the Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Comptroller, Treasurer, Attorney-General, State Engineer and Surveyor, and Superintendent of Public Works.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of one bound volume recording the disposition of petitions filed with the Canal Board. The petitions deal with the construction of barge canal terminals. Data recorded in this volume consists of: the location of the terminal petitioned for; file number; by whom the petition was presented; date received; date returned for correction, if necessary; date approved; date the investigation commenced, if necessary; result of the investigation; date the petition was filed with the Canal Board; tenor of the report; date the petitioners were notified of proposed modification or rejection; date the modification was accepted; date of the hearing before the Canal Board; date the final action was taken by the Canal Board; date when the State Engineer was authorized to prepare plans and specifications; date of the approval of plans; date the work was advertised; date when bids were opened; to whom the contract was awarded; amount of the engineer's estimate; contract price; and the date of completion. Rarely are all categories completed for each petition. In fact, two thirds of the volume is empty.
