Administrative History
A 1902 amendment to the State Charities Law created the office of Fiscal Supervisor of State Charities to oversee the financial management and the condition of the buildings, grounds, and property of charitable institutions. The Fiscal Supervisor was authorized to require information from institutions in order to fulfill his mandate to report to the legislature on the funds needed by each institution and why the funds were needed.
Scope and Content Note
The institution steward compiled these inventories of all types of moveable property and their values in the offices, shops, and other areas of the institution. This series contains carbon copies of the original inventories which were sent to the Fiscal Supervisor of State Charities or, after the institution's transfer to the Department of Correction in 1932, to the Commissioner of Correction.
Each inventory begins with an "Index and Summary" alphabetically listing the rooms or halls in each building, the page on which property in each room or hall is itemized, the total value of property in each room or hall, and the total value of all property. The bulk of each volume is an itemized inventory providing: building; hall or room; type of property (linoleum, chairs, books, typewriters, etc.); quantity on hand; unit price (very rarely); value of each type of property on hand; total value of property in each hall or room; and total value of property in building.
Other Finding Aids
