- This series consists of newspaper articles, press releases, and editorials relating to all aspects of Thruway construction, openings, and operations. They were collected to monitor the effects of the public relations campaign mounted by the Thruway Authority and serve as a record of progress in construction and Thruway operations. Administrative History
The Thruway Authority's public relations function started in 1950 when the Authority was created.
The administrative structure of this program has changed several times, and had the following titles: Public Relations (1950-1953), Department of Public Information and Business Promotion (1954-1958, 1967), Department of Public Information (1959-1966, 1968), Department of Information and Commercial Affairs (1969-1978), and Department of Information (1979-1985). Its functions have remained constant: the distribution of information about the Thruway to the public and promotion of support for and use of the road.
Scope and Content Note
Clipped newspaper articles and editorials relating to all aspects of Thruway construction, openings, and operations. Articles come from newspapers all over the State. Also included are occasional copies of news releases.
These clippings were collected by the public information office to monitor the effects of the public relations campaign mounted by the Thruway Authority. These files also serve as a record of progress in the construction and continuing operations of the Thruway. Clippings are filed under a variety of subjects ranging from names of prominent individuals connected with the Thruway, to the names of communities along the Thruway corridor, to general subjects such as "economic effects," "bonds," "facilities," and "safety."
