Acquisition Information
These records were transferred by the New York State Unified Court System, Office of Court Administration in 2017.
Custodial History
This index was not created in the New York County Clerk's Office, but it has evidently been held by that office for nearly forty years. The majority of the entries in the index relate to pre-1848 court records that were transferred to the New York State Archives in early 2017. The index was donated by Mary-Jo Kline, editor of the papers of Aaron Burr.
Card index was compiled to identify court and other legal documents for the print and microfilm editions of the papers of Aaron Burr. The project was funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and hosted by the New York Historical Society. The editors were Mary-Jo Kline and Joanne Wood Ryan.
State court records referred to in the index were then located at the Historical Documents Collection, Queens College, City University of New York (on deposit by the New York Court of Appeals), or at the New York County Clerk's Office. The state court records at Queens College were transferred to the New York State Archives in 1982. The pre-1848 state court records at the New York County Clerk's Office were transferred to the State Archives in 2017.
