Administrative History
The New York State School for the Deaf, established in 1875 in Rome, N.Y. as the Central New York School for Deaf-Mutes, was founded by a deaf man named Alphonso Johnson, Dr. Thomas Gallaudet, and a group of local businessmen. The school functioned as a private institution managed by a board of trustees to which the State of New York provided additional support. In 1963, ownership of the school was transferred to the State Education Department.
