Scope and Content Note
This series contains copies of legislative bills and accompanying records relating to the consideration of legislative bills (eventually either signed or vetoed by the Governor) by the Senate Committee on Conservation and Recreation. The records relate to approximately 100 bills considered during the years 1981 and 1983. Types of records in the files include: copies of the bill, which include typescript drafts and the final printed version; and Memoranda of Support, the majority of which were prepared by the Senate and Assembly sponsors and by the Department of Environmental Conservation, that summarize each bill and present arguments in support.
Other records include memoranda and correspondence from supporters or opponents to the legislation, which include memoranda or letters from a variety of groups and organizations giving detailed reasons why the legislation should either be approved or defeated in the Committee; newspaper clippings relating to the legislation; a Committee worksheet for each bill assigned to the Committee, which contains the Senate and Assembly bill numbers, names of sponsors, a summary of the bill, present status in the Senate and Assembly, legislative history of the bill, and names of organizations or offices sending letters in support or in opposition; and veto memoranda from the Governor, which explain why he returned a given bill to the Legislature without signing it. The files do not contain a record of the Committee vote on these bills.
