Scope and Content Note
The series consists of material produced by the Joint Legislative Committee on Fire Laws as products of work to study and recommend changes to laws relating to volunteer firemen and fire protection codes in localities and fire districts. The Joint Legislative Committee was created by a concurrent resolution on April 2, 1955, at which point its predecessor, the Temporary State Commission on Fire Laws, was dissolved.
The material includes draft, proof, and final copies of the committee's interim and final reports (Box 1); press releases; form letters; organizational meeting materials; meeting agenda and minutes; and related correspondence and other material on actions taken or proposed by the committee or its subcommittees.
Issues addressed by the committee and represented in the series include: qualifications for fire department officers; disability benefits; penalties for sounding false fire alarms; school fire safety; and responsibility for damage claims from forest fires.
Also present are two 7" reels of magnetic audiotape of a January 1961 meeting of the committee. A note found with the first tape (parts 1 and 2 of the meeting) indicates points on the tapes (parts 2 and 3) at which certain speakers may be heard. It is unknown when the note was made.
